The Prince Edward Island Nurses’ Union (PEINU) has proudly represented the voices of Registered Nurses since 1974, promoting and protecting their well-being in the workplace and their right to deliver high-quality public health services with honour, respect, and dignity.

A member of the Canadian Federation of Nurses’ Unions and affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress, today PEINU represents more than 1,200 Registered Nurses working in acute care, long term care, community care, mental health and addictions. PEINU is committed to being a strong, credible and respected ambassador for Registered Nurses and quality health care in the province, negotiating, administrating and improving the Collective Agreement for the benefit of workplaces and PEI’s health care.

Working collaboratively with the President and Board, the Executive Director provides leadership and accountability for guiding growth and service delivery consistent with the Union’s objectives, vision and mission. The Executive Director is a servant leader, responsible for establishing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with the membership, employer, government departments and agencies and other key stakeholders. As Chief Labour Relations Officer, the Executive Director provides strategic advice and operational oversight and coordination for all activities of the Union, including labour relations, collective bargaining, strategic communications, policy and administration. Leading a small team, they ensure effective financial and human resource planning, and administrative services to achieve the overall constitutional mandate of the union.

The successful candidate has a post-secondary degree in a relevant field coupled with leadership and teambuilding experience as well as experience interpreting collective agreements and leading or participating in union negotiations and collective bargaining. An understanding and knowledge of the collective bargaining process, collective agreements, relevant acts and regulations and current issues related to nursing and health care is required. Prior experience spent in a unionized environment and in the health sector are considered major assets. The Executive Director has superior EQ and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated experience cultivating and building strong relationships and motivating others to achieve a shared vision. The successful candidate has strong problem solving, conflict management and facilitation skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
