Black & McDonald is seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to join its Atlantic Region team. This is an excellent opportunity for an electrical construction professional who enjoys working on diverse, challenging projects and collaborating with field teams, operations, clients, and industry partners.
You’ll support projects across the commercial, government, industrial, and institutional sectors while contributing to accurate estimating, pre-construction planning, and successful project delivery.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Estimating Department Manager for Atlantic Canada, the Electrical Estimator will prepare medium to large electrical estimates from conceptual design through issued-for-construction documents.
The ideal candidate brings strong electrical construction knowledge, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Estimating & Pre-Construction – Prepare electrical estimates, budgets, and value-engineering solutions for projects from conceptual design through IFC documentation.
- Tender & Scope Review – Review drawings, specifications, tender documents, and addenda to define scope, identify risks, and obtain required clarifications.
- Cost Development – Develop labour, material, and equipment estimates and conduct pre-bid site visits as required.
- Collaboration & Relationships – Work closely with owners, consultants, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, field teams, and Operations to support accurate and competitive bids.
- Bid Review & Handover – Participate in bid reviews, communicate project risks and opportunities, and support Operations following contract award.
Continuous Improvement – Participate in lessons-learned discussions to strengthen future estimates and project delivery.
Required
- Electrical trade certificate, Electrical Engineering degree, or Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma/certificate.
- 10+ years of electrical construction estimating experience.
- Strong ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Excellent communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Ability to obtain required security clearances.
- Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence.
- Pre-construction and design-build estimating experience.
- Experience with Accubid/Trimble or comparable estimating software.
- Knowledge of Nova Scotia occupational health and safety requirements.
