Deputy Minister, Health & Wellness - Province of Nova Scotia (Filled)

The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness provides leadership to the health system for the delivery of care and treatment, prevention of illness and injury, and promotion of health and healthy living. This is an important juncture in Nova Scotia’s journey to an accessible, innovative and integrated health system that delivers high quality care and service and promotes wellness for the people of Nova Scotia. The Deputy Minister has an influential and meaningful role in leading the transition from the current to future state and contributing to the vision and outcomes of an exemplary integrated system in Canada.

The department has overall accountability for setting the strategic policy direction, priorities, and standards for the health care system; ensuring appropriate access to quality care, managing public funding for health services that are of high value to the population; ensuring accountability for funding and for measuring and monitoring organizations and health system performance. The Nova Scotia Department of Health is responsible for managing the province’s $4.6 billion annual investment in the health and wellness system and for providing direction on capital investments that are foundational for health system transformation.

The Deputy Minister serves at the pleasure of the Premier of Nova Scotia, functionally reporting to the Head of the Public Service. The Deputy Minister has a daily reporting relationship to the Minister of Health and Wellness and serves as the Department’s executive head and holds key accountability for the strategic direction and collaboration within the Nova Scotia health care system. The Deputy Minister leads the planning and prioritization that promotes good governance, communicates priorities and drives excellence in performance within the health system. The Deputy Minister has a critical role in effectively collaborating with the Nova Scotia Health Authority, IWK Health Centre, strategic partners and multiple stakeholders across a complex system. This includes the skill and expertise to create and/or identify opportunities, policies, processes, and performance standards that ensure an integrated approach to health care services.

The successful candidate has proven executive leadership within a complex health system, together with understanding of clinical and academic environments. Extensive experience fostering multiple stakeholder relationships that result in collaborative health care models is core to the role. The Deputy Minister has a track record of providing executive oversight of complex health system transformations with demonstrated success in creating integrated health care services delivery and establishing effective performance standards across a multitude of services.

A Masters or equivalent professional or clinical designation is required. The successful candidate is a superb communicator who invests in relationships and leads with influence.
