Irving Shipbuilding, Canada’s National Shipbuilder, is seeking a Corporate Counsel to join its Legal team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As a partner in the National Shipbuilding Strategy with the federal government, Irving was tasked in constructing Canada’s future naval combatant fleet. This role is an opportunity to gain exceptional experience working on high-profile projects, including Canada’s largest defense procurement program since the Second World War.
The successful candidate will be supporting nationally significant initiatives including the River Class Destroyer, Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, and Halifax-class ship repair programs. Reporting to the General Counsel, Legal, you will play a key role in helping guide complex, high-impact projects within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
In this role, you will provide practical, business-focused legal advice across a broad range of commercial, procurement, regulatory, and operational matters. You will negotiate and draft complex commercial agreements, advise on risk and procurement strategy, and partner closely with senior leadership and operational teams to support critical business decisions. Working at the heart of the organization, you’ll gain exposure to large-scale projects that directly contribute to Canada’s future naval fleet.
The ideal candidate is a proactive and solutions-oriented legal professional with strong corporate/ commercial experience gained in private practice and/or an in-house environment. You hold an LL.B. or J.D. and are licensed to practice law in Nova Scotia, with 4–7 years of experience drafting and negotiating complex agreements. You bring strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical advice for operational teams. Experience with defense contracting, public procurement, or Canada’s Standard Acquisition Clauses and Conditions (SACC) is considered an asset.
