The Voice of the Canadian Recycling Industry

The Canadian Association of Recycling Industries (CARI) is an influential, national voice of over 200 member companies engaged in recycling and resource recovery, including scrap metal, electronic, paper, and plastics. Comprising businesses of varying scale across Canada, members of CARI collectively employ around 34,000 employees and contribute indirectly to the employment of approximately 85,000 Canadians. The recycling industry is crucial to creating sustainable resource management and drives commercial success and innovation of new technologies and products that are vital to economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Working closely with its membership, including provincial, federal and municipal governments, policy makers, and other industry associations, CARI promotes the growth and viability of recycling industries across Canada. Additionally, CARI provides a platform for networking and knowledge-sharing within the recycling sector, facilitating the exchange of best practices and innovative approaches to enhance the industry's overall effectiveness.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) sets the strategy and vision for the Association, is responsive and active in stakeholder engagement, ensuring the Association's mission and objectives are achieved. The CEO is responsible for overall management and leadership, including financial sustainability, operations, organizational brand/culture, change & risk management, and key relationships.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of three years of demonstrated leadership experience supporting a member-based organization and leading advocacy activities. Experience working in an industrial setting, and/or the recycling or resource recovery industry, value-added processing or supply chain (scrap metals, paper, plastics, critical minerals, circularity or electronics) is an asset. They have a track record of impacting public policy and galvanizing support and engagement among members.

The CEO is savvy at building trusted relationships, communicating publicly, including the media and social properties, and fostering association excellence, ultimately enhancing member value. They prioritize meaningful government and member engagement and are a respected leader and catalyst for the economic and social impact of its members.
