Assistant Vice-President, Development - Dalhousie University (Filled)

Dalhousie University is recognized nationally and internationally for its excellence in academics, research and innovation, and leadership in community support and development. Having recently celebrated 200 years of achievement as one of Canada’s leading comprehensive research-intensive universities, Dalhousie’s legacy is seen in the spirit and ingenuity of its people and in its broad impacts on communities both at home and around the world.

The continued development of Dalhousie’s mission of teaching, research, and service depends on alignment with alumni and partner interests. The Office of Advancement, in which the Assistant Vice-President, Development (AVP) plays a leadership role, is critical for the articulation of this alignment and therefore enabling the University to move forward on its strategic directions in concert with supporters.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Advancement, and as a key member of the Advancement Leadership Team and as part of the senior administration of the University, the AVP is accountable for championing philanthropic revenue generation and providing strong leadership and guidance to the development/fundraising team.

The AVP is a fundraising expert, a purpose-led leader and key ambassador for Dalhousie, with responsibility for cultivating and building long term strategic partnerships and relationships across campus, in the community and around the world. The AVP leads, inspires and develops a high performing team of development and fundraising professionals responsible for raising funds through principal, major and planned giving programs, as well as a prospect research team that support those efforts. The AVP is forward thinking, leading vision and strategy in alignment with the University’s priorities, all in support of maximizing philanthropic investment and impact for years to come.

The successful candidate has at minimum an undergraduate university degree. The AVP has at least ten years of progressive fundraising leadership experience ideally spent in a post-secondary setting. They have a demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of fund development, preferably within a complex research-intensive setting and ideally have major fundraising campaign experience. The successful candidate is a strategic thinker and a dynamic and inspirational leader with a strong track record of developing high performing teams. The AVP has superior EQ, gravitas and exceptional communication skills with a proven track record of forging sustainable long term relationships, partnerships and philanthropic results.

Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. The university encourages applications from Aboriginal people, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of its community.
